The Shore & More!

Stonington

The town of Stonington is well-known for over 100,000 miles of stone walls, charming countryside, and 25 miles of beautiful shoreline along the eastern Connecticut coast. Stonington was settled in 1649 when the earliest settlers to the area arrived from Plymouth colony. Stonington encompasses 50 square miles, with a population of just over 18,500. Stonington village is home to an active fishing fleet that celebrates an annual Blessing of the Fleet.

Stonington Village features tree-lined streets with quaint shops and excellent restaurants. Residential living in this historic community features rural estates as well as coastal summer homes. The business of Stonington is best described as the preservation of traditional New England coastal village life. The Stonington Harbor Light, a low stone scenic building, was the first lighthouse established by the US Federal government in 1823. Today, this historic landmark is provides a picturesque backdrop for wedding parties and gatherings.

In recent decades, Stonington has experienced a large influx of new home owners using historic borough houses as second homes. The town has undergone a widespread reconditioning of these homes since the mid-1990s, when an altercation over redevelopment rights attracted substantial news coverage about Stonington's revitalization. The median home value in Town of Stonington is $387,100. The median list price per square foot in Town of Stonington is $234, which is higher than the New London metro average of $150. The median price of homes currently listed in Town of Stonington is $495,000 while the median price of homes that sold is $475,000. Buyers can find entry level properties in the $200,000 - $300,000 price range… as well as lovely estates worth well over $2,000,000. Stonington’s varied personalities, from the fishing fleet community, to the ‘borough’s upscale downtown, and the scenic countryside, make it an ideal location to consider a home, or second/vacation home… conveniently located between Boston & New York.
